Voting Rights Project

Fair Elections Center’s Voting Rights Project continues the legacy of our ambitious beginnings in 2006 as the Fair Elections Legal Network by seeking to expand access to voting and democracy and remove barriers to participation. Through litigation, advocacy, reports, and informational resources, we fight threats to voting rights and work to promote democracy. We work directly with state advocates and on-the-ground civic engagement groups to ensure our work is deeply connected to those most affected by it.

Policy Advocacy

Fair Elections Center works year-round to prevent policy makers from enacting barriers to voting, especially those that harm already-marginalized communities, including young people, the elderly, people of color, people with felonies, disabled people, or those who fall into some combination of those categories. We work with election officials throughout each year to guide best practices, advocate for adequate election resources, and introduce creative solutions to make voting more accessible.

Litigation

Fair Elections Center investigates under-the-radar violations of the right to vote and has sued to enforce federal and state law requirements in novel ways. We do not have a single approach to litigation, and this frees us to discover new methods. By studying state election codes, including ID requirements and voter registration procedures, we identify opportunities to expand equal access to the ballot. We force election officials to explain why they treat similar groups of eligible voters differently and obtain court orders requiring them to stop such discriminatory practices.
