Deb Gruver

Press Secretary

Deb is press secretary for Fair Elections Center. A longtime reporter, she learned the ropes at the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Kansas. Before her admission to the professional school, Deb’s concentrations in the School of Liberal Arts were women’s studies, political science, and Jewish studies.

She has reported in various cities in Kansas as well as in Jackson, Wyoming, and in Indiana. She spent most of her career covering crime, government and investigations. She’s a strong advocate for transparency in government, especially diligent about open records and open meetings. Deb helped lead two statewide open records audits — one in Indiana, the first such project in the country, and one in Kansas. An undersheriff illegally detained her during the latter audit for “going around asking questions.” She has served on the boards of the Kansas Coalition for Open Government, Kansas Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and American Collegiate Society for Adapted Athletics. Deb also has worked as a communications director for a national reproductive rights foundation.
