Fair Elections Center supports President Joe Biden’s directives to modernize federal voting resources and improve access to voting information and voter registration through federal agencies. We applaud the administration’s recognition that these barriers fall disproportionately on Black, indigenous, and other voters of color, as well as people with disabilities.
We share the administration’s stated commitment to ensuring that registering to vote and voting be made simple and easy for all eligible Americans, and we also urge Congress to take up this mantle by passing HR 1/S 1, the For the People Act, to put a stop to state legislatures’ anti-voter onslaught.
Among others, the executive order has these important provisions:
Expands access to voter registration and election information through federal agencies
Directs federal agencies to accept designation under provisions of the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 that allow states to designate federal agencies, with their permission, to provide assistance with voter registration
Directs that vote.gov be modernized to provide a better user experience
Increases opportunities for federal employees to vote as well as serve as non-partisan poll workers and non-partisan poll observers
Directs measures to ensure equal access to voters with disabilities including
improvements to accessibility of the federal voter registration form
Directs measures to ensure access to voter registration for eligible individuals in federal custody
Establishes a Native American Voting Rights Steering Group
