In 2012, Fair Elections Center launched Campus Vote Project (CVP) to expand its work around student voting issues. CVP works with universities, community colleges, faculty, students and election officials to reduce barriers to student voting. Our goal is to help campuses institutionalize reforms that empower students with the information they need to register and vote. As part of our mission, we want to invite students who have played a role in expanding or deepening democratic engagement at their institution to apply for our Student Advisory Board. This leadership program provides opportunities for civically-minded and active students to influence Campus Vote Project, learn more about democratic engagement nationally, and develop relationships with peers, institutions, and civic leaders.

Position Description and Responsibilities

The Student Advisory Board position is a $1,000 paid position for civic-minded student leaders who want to be a part of the national democratic engagement and voting rights movements. The board member position requires 20 hours per calendar month December 2024 through May 2025 and paid in one installment within 30 days of the end of the spring term. The Student Advisory Board consists of 17 members: 11 representing states that CVP operates in, and 6 representing various affinity groups. We are currently searching to fill the roles of Accessibility & Disability Representative; Indigenous, Native & Tribal Representative; North Carolina Representative; and Texas Representative.

Responsibilities include:

Advise the Campus Vote Project and Fair Elections Center

Offer strategic insights and recommendations based on your expertise and knowledge to assist CVP in planning and achieving goals, addressing challenges, and guidance on the Democracy Fellowship overall programming.
Support in the advancement of student-friendly voting policies
Provide updates and share on the ground expertise in the Quarterly BoD Meetings
Stay informed about advisory board matters, prepare for meetings, and review/comment on requests, minutes and reports

Democracy Fellowship Support

Assist with Fellowship programming by participating and/or leading in discussion blocks and ACEs and attending at least two synchronous programs
Lead Moodle forums in National Requirements Course
Provide strategic guidance and lead on initiatives with a particular focus on addressing systematic voting barriers for their respective campuses as needed

Student Voting Network

Develop the strategic framework and manage the Student Voting Network
Create spaces in each of their communities for student collaboration and learning by collectively hosting at least one event and/or creating one resource per semester with other SAB members
Represent the student voice and CVP in media requests as needed
Actively recruit students on their campus and in their community into the Student Voting Network

State and HBCU Representatives will…

Provide guidance, support, and expertise in the work happening in their state under the direction of the CVP state coordinator.
Support the State Coordinator in organizing and actively participating in the state’s annual Student Voting Summit
Support the development and facilitation of monthly statewide Democracy Fellows meetings and election law trainings.

Affinity Group Representatives will…

Create one blog post, social media post, and/or resource in celebration of their respective history/heritage month that connects their affinity group to voting and democracy in coordination with CVP communications team
Spearhead a project per semester that supports their affinity group within the CVP ecosystem. This project could be, but not limited to:
- Partnership: Develop a strategic partnership with a student group, organization, nonprofit, etc. that will strengthen our expertise, reach and support of their respective community
- Resource Building: Create a toolkit, program-in-a-box, webinar, and/or resource that will support CVP audiences (CVP staff, campus administrators/faculty/staff, and/or democracy fellows) in better understanding and addressing the needs of their respective affinity group.
- Community Building: Host one gathering for their respective affinity group that fosters a space of community, learning and support.

This is a full-time remote position, with a salary starting at $58,000 commensurate with experience. Fair Elections Center offers generous employer paid health, vision, and dental insurance, 3 weeks vacation, and a 403(B) retirement plan with employer contribution.
